Acupuncture helps to regulate almost all of the bodies day-to-day functions, but what effect does it have on your metabolism?
Metabolism is the chemical process that turns food into energy. When you have a normal metabolism this happens naturally throughout the day, but for people with certian metabolic conditions this isn't the case. Disruption to the normal metabolic process can be cause by many different factors including genetic defects, lifestyle choices, and trauma. Every persons metabolism works at a different rate. For some they have fast metabolism which can make it hard to maintain a healthy muscle mass. For others it can do the opposite and make it seem impossible to lose weight. When looking at metabolic disorders from a TCM perspective the energy in the body is either lacking, blocked, or there is an excess.
What Needs to Change?
If you are struggling to maintain a healthy metabolism it is usually a direct result of hormone imbalances. The three most important hormones to look at when observing metabolism are the bodies insulin levels, glucose, and thyroid. There are many different things that can cause imbalances in these systems, some of which being stress, poor dietary habits, and lack of exercise. Traditional Chinese Medicine will observe all of these in addition to your other bodily functions to best understand what it is that is causing your thyroid issues.
How Does Acupuncture Help?
Acupuncture has been shown to balance hormones when accompanied by lifestyle modifications. Acupuncture helps control food cravings, boosts metabolism, improves digestion and helps the liver function optimally. The liver produces chemicals that help break down fat, while filtering out toxins that can slow our body’s ability to digest and regulate. Excess stress can lead to a slower metabolism, an increase in body fat and poor sleep. Regular acupuncture treatments can help reduce stress as well as moderate hormones.
If you’re feeling tired or sluggish, put on some weight, or are dealing with stress and depression, acupuncture can definitely help.
