Acupuncture for Fertility

Struggling to conceive? Acupuncture may be the answer you are looking for.

How does Acupuncture support fertility?

Acupuncture can help to re-balance hormones and regulate the menstrual cycle thus improving the probability of getting pregnant. Acupuncture along with Chinese herbs can treat many different fertility issues including but not limited to elevated follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, endocrine disorders, autoimmune disorders, repeated pregnancy loss, unexplained (idiopathic) infertility and male factors including men affected with sperm-DNA-fragmentation. Acupuncture is able to assist in fertility whether you are planning to conceive naturally, through intrauterine insemination (IUI), or in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Who is eligible for fertility treatment?

Acupuncture has proven to address almost all hormone-related fertility issues. If your fertility problems are more physical (scarring, tubal adhesions) acupuncture may not be the solution, but it can still be beneficial in some cases as it can improve ovarian functions and thicken the uterine lining. Acupuncture is especially helpful when all tests come back with normal results but you are still struggling to conceive.

How often should I come in?

If you are looking to get pregnant consistency is key. Coming in once a week until pregnancy is achieved is usually the typical treatment plan, but your acupuncturist will work with you to develop a plan specific to your needs.

The Mei Zen Abdominal protocol is a specialized treatment for fertility and the best results are achieved with 2 sessions a week for 5 weeks. Depending on your situation it may take multiple rounds to regulate your cycle and achieve conception. A viable pregnancy is typically achieved in 2- 8 months with consistent treatments.

A "Beautiful" Period

Let's talk about menstrual cycles! In Chinese medicine an ideal menstrual cycle should be:

  • 28-30 days

  • flow for 5-7 days

  • the color will be red

  • no mood changes

  • no breast tenderness

  • no cramping

  • no clots

At your appointment, we will go into great detail about your cycle and your health in general. The details of your cycle help us decide how to best regulate your body with acupuncture and herbs.
